I will take you through every step of the process, including choosing and preparing your skin, wrapping and tying the rings, mounting the head, tightening, shaving and tuning the drum! We will also cover maintaining and preserving the wood as well as making repairs, correcting cracks, improvements to the bottom and bearing edge. This includes how to install a rubber protective foot on the drum!
By the end of this class you will be able to perform all aspects of djembe repair, maintenance and upgrade! You will end up with the drum of your dreams and the know how to do it yourself, saving you hundreds of dollars over the life of your drum. Fall in love with your drum again or create the drum of your dreams!
You can bring your own shell or choose from top-grade shells I provide. You can create your own look by choosing up to 3 colors of rope. You are guaranteed to end up with an amazing drum that looks striking and sounds outstanding!
Cost is only $275 if you are bringing your own djembe shell and only $500 if you choose one of the amazing professional shells like those shown here (these are the shells from last workshop, new ones will be comparable)! Drum shells that you can choose from will be posted as soon as I order them, availability subject to when you reserve yours with your deposit.

Details of Workshop:
Day 1 (around 4hrs)
Skin selection – We have several options including goat, horse and calf
Soaking the skin in water first so it has time to soften up and become workable
Shell preparation including leveling and sanding the bearing edges if required
Choosing the fabric to wrap the rings with and getting them wrapped
Choose your rope colour – choose up to 3 colors - and wrap the rings
Shaving of your hide if necessary
Putting the skin on the drum!
Once the skin is on the drum it will take a few days to dry
Day 2 (around 2hrs)
Final shave and polish of the drum head
Tightening, tensioning and tuning your drum
Making a handle
Discussion on care, tuning and maintenance of your drum
A basic djembe lesson to help you feel comfortable and confident and get a good sound
I will be assisting and advising, and lending a hand where needed to make sure your drum is looking and sounding great by the time you are finished!
