Explore the relationship between greenhouse gases, atmospheric disturbances, and the changes we observe in how our local ecosystems function in this full day course led by SUNY ESF (https://www.esf.edu/) Professor of Environmental Engineering, Dr. Timothy Morin (https://www.esf.edu/faculty/morin/index.php). Participants will begin with an introduction to the carbon cycle and its impact on meteorological conditions, then discover how scientists and engineers use methane sensors, pressure transducers, temperature probes, carbon dioxide sensors, and sonic anemometers to observe, record, and analyze the movement of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Dr. Morin's guidance, participants will also gain practical, hands-on experience with various types of sensors, electrical wiring, and weather station design and construction as they build and deploy of a fully functional weather and climate station.Prior experience with data analysis, or familiarity with computer programming and electronics is helpful but not required; this class is designed for beginners. All supplies, including laptops, will be provided. Participants only need to bring their curiosity and desire to learn. Please note: this is program is open to both teens AND adults. Interested adults who wish to attend on their own are encouraged to do so. Likewise, teens may participate without adult supervision. Teens and their parent/guardians are welcome to participate together, but must register individually.
