Building a Giant Switch: A LabSpace Hands-On WorkshopHave you ever wondered what actually happens "under the hood" when you flip a light switch? Come join us at the build table for a project that is both "old school" and high-tech!
We’re going big with a classic engineering project: The Giant Lever Switch. Using cardboard, copper tape, and brass, every student will construct a functional mechanical switch that "thunks" into place to light up an LED. It’s a great way to see exactly how electricity travels through a circuit—and it's just plain fun to play with.
The Project Story
This specific build is inspired by the 4-H Electricity project. We love 4-H's focus on "learning by doing," so we're offering this as a "Spark" class—a one-hour session to try out a new skill without any long-term commitment.
4-H Members: Enjoy a $2 "Spark" discount as a thank-you for your involvement in the community!
Everyone Else: You are 100% welcome! No membership or prior experience is needed to join the fun.
Age Groups & Family Building
At LabSpace, we love it when families learn together. Because copper tape and cardboard assembly can be a bit "fiddly," we’ve designed this class with two ways to build:
Junior Engineers (Ages 7-8): This is a Partner Build. We require a hands-on adult helper to stay and work as a team with the student.
Lead Engineers (Ages 9-14): Older students are welcome to build independently, though parents are always encouraged to grab a chair and join in.
Class Details
Cost: $12 (or $10 for 4-H Members)
Ages: 7 to 14
