What do Buds & Spawn have in store for you on this particular chilly winter evening? Something special (and, who knows, maybe even a bit festive) to warm the cockles with our favourite raconteur troubadour alongside the finest wonky music selector out there.Stephen EvEns is a singular songwriter who makes charming, characterful albums that tap into the twisted toy town spirit of Syd Barrett, the Kinks, Kevin Ayers and Cardiacs, while evoking a world entirely of his own making.
Stephen Gilchrist is a drummer, producer and engineer who founded and runs Brixton Hill Studios and has toured the world with truculent Brit pop stars, disco sensations, ageing punks and countless others. Many of you may recognise him as the magician who can somehow keep time through the final segment of ‘Vine’ when he’s behind the kit with Tim Smith’s Spratleys.
They are, of course, the same person.
Stephen EvEns third album ‘Here Come The Lights’ was released on Onomatopoeia earlier this year, and has been described as ‘a wonk fest glittered with a dirty glam sound’ (LTW) and ‘new wave poetics, dry, surreal and amusing’ (The Arts Desk). We are super excited to welcome him back to the Buds & Spawn stage, we just hope he doesn’t bring the rain with him this time… (google ‘Sheffield floods 2019’, LOL!)
As if that weren’t enough, we are beside ourselves with joy to have the incomparable Marina Organ, of the legendary Organ fanzine and host of the Other Rock Show. Marina’s knowledge of music with 'other' time signatures and adventurous song structures is nothing less than encyclopaedic, we are not worthy!!
