Welcome to Bude Climate Festival 2024! Saturday 1st June.
Join us from 7.30am to 10pm for a host of free activities for everyone. With a mix of music, comedy, theatre, discussion and arts activities, the festival is focused on helping Bude towards a brighter future!
From shortly after sunrise to beyond sunset, our events encourage everyone to explore how to adapt to a changing climate, and minimise our impacts in fun and interesting ways.
As a thank you to the amazing community of Bude, all the daytime events are free to attend. Secure your space at the most popular events by booking your free tickets in advance.
What is happening?
⚬ Summerleaze Beach 7.30am (low tide:
Fibonacci Series and Beach Art with artist Bill Bartlett: Collaborate on a large-scale artwork inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical pattern found in nature.
⚬ Castle Grounds 10am to 4pm:
Children’s Yurt: Circus Skills Workshops, Storytelling performances, Arts & Crafts, games, toys, face painting, and more – plus look out for Detritus of the Deep around the Castle Grounds on the day! All activities, including face painting, are FREE.
Family Activities: Found Sound Music workshop with composer Arlo Anwin, Circuits with Discovering 42, Guided Beach Cleans with 2 Minute Foundation, ‘Walking Labyrinth for Kids’ with artist Bill Bartlett (includes a journey to the beach to create a temporary, walkable labyrinth in the sand), instrument making workshops, plus a chance to join the Junk Band with Global Jamming. All activities are FREE (advance booking required for Composition Workshop)
Fashion Village: Find out more about sustainable fashion, plus stalls showcasing vintage, handmade, pre-loved and re-purposed items, children’s clothes with 2nd Lyfe, Making and Mending Workshops at the Mending Table, a Talk and Q&A with Bude’s Great British Sewing Bee finalist Tony Rea as he repurposes an item into new clothes! Talks and workshops are free to attend – plus watch this space for more to be announced…
Marketplace of the Unique: Browse trader stalls with a range of homeware, jewellery, pet supplies, gifts, food and drink.
Marketplace of Ideas: Be inspired by stalls from community groups, clubs and organisations serving the Bude Area. Find out more about ongoing projects, how to get involved or how they can help you!
Climate Smart Home Hub: Come and get free advice from CEP’s Low Carbon Energy Officer about options for your home or business, talk with local businesses and suppliers of sustainable energy options and find out more.
The Bandstand: Music throughout the day from local bands and performers.
Love Your Bike: Free bike maintenance advice plus minor repairs and tweaks to bicycles brought along on the day (payments for parts needed, charity donation to Bude Cancer Cafe encouraged). Free demos and presentations on How to do a Bike Safety M Check. Plus a showcase of Bude Bamboo Bikes – bamboo framed ladies Dutch style and mountain bikes being developed here in Bude to reduce landfill.
⚬ Eco-Crafts at Bude Library: Pop into Bude Library 10am–12.45pm for free children’s eco-crafting.
Get Refreshed!: Food available all day from The Garden Box. Drinks available all day from The Preston Gate mobile bar
⚬ Parkhouse Centre 10.30am to 10.00pm:
Climate Cinema Space: Short climate change films throughout the day in a dedicated area in the Parkhouse Centre. The programme culminates at 3pm with the Bude premiere of Power to the People by Cornwall Climate Care, followed at 4pm by Race For The Future, a feature-length documentary about a fossil fuel-free 9,000 mile journey from the UK to Chile, undertaken by filmmaker James Levelle and followed by a Q&A session.
Sensory Theatre Show: Two delightful performances for 0–3-year-olds and young members of our SEN community, presented by Jasmine Cole Productions. A sensory story show that uses puppets, key-word signing and baby safe props to follow a day in the life of the birds in our gardens. Using sound, colour, texture and small puppets, the storyteller introduces a range of garden birds to the children, who can help feed the birds, build soft nests and sing wake-up and nighttime songs.
Panel Discussion: How do we respond to a changing climate? Presenting perspectives from climate action, parliament, education and our community. Come and listen to this panel discussion, with opportunities to engage with your own questions. Current confirmed panellists:
🔸Dan Rogerson, MP for North Cornwall 2005–2015, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Water, Forestry, Resource Management and Rural Affairs at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs 2013–2015
🔸James Bettany, Lecturer in Primary Education at Plymouth University, currently writing a doctorate exploring children's lived experience of environmental messaging in children's television programming
🔸Rob Harrison-Plastow, spokesperson for The Climate Majority Project
🔸Kelly Kemp, participant in The Bude Area Community Jury on Climate Change
Creative Workshop and Talk for adults – Sacred Geometry with artist Bill Bartlett: Explore nature’s patterns in the concept of sacred geometry.
Comedy Night: The Festival finale brings an evening of comedy to The Ivor Potter Hall!
🎤Stuart Goldsmith Internationally award-winning comedian and podcaster. "The funny side of climate change - yes, really! Quiet excellence...an intelligent, well-crafted act." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (The Times, 2023). His solo stand-up show ‘Spoilers’ won the prestigious Best Show 2023 at Leicester Comedy Festival and was one of the best-reviewed shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2023, where he played to sell-out audiences and received widespread critical acclaim.

Laugh-out-loud lunacy, underpinned by an unnerving logic, Becki Snarl presents the comedy cutting edge of environmentalism with her unique style. “Hugely entertaining, hilarious and bringing an intelligence few comics dare to. Making the extreme extremely funny, the outrageous serenely palatable. She is one super bright animal.” (Phil Kay)
