On February 2nd, 1959 Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and Dion played a rousing show as part of their Winter Dance Party tour. Early in the morning of February 3rd, all but Dion lost their lives in the crash of a small plane they had chartered to escape long hours of bitterly cold travelling in a bus with an inadequate heater. Today's 'fantasy concert' will include hits that Buddy, Bopper, and Ritchie would have performed at Moorhead, MN Armory on February 3rd if their plane had not crashed. The tour pressed on, with Waylon Jennings singing Buddy's songs and Frankie Avalon and Fabian were added to the lineup. On February 8th, 1959, the tour played Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, and today's concert will include hits by Waylon, Frankie, and Fabian as well as others such as Roy Orbison, Linda Ronstadt Bobby Vee, whose lives were touched by the tour headliners. Doors open at 6pm. Attendance will be limited to 150. Light refreshments and bottled soft drinks will be available. There is no admission charge, but goodwill donations from the audience pay the musicians and help to defray the church's event hosting costs.
