When we study Buddhist Psychology, we study the nature of the mind and how the mind functions. Once we understand this, then we can study how the mind interacts with the external world—the relationship between subject and object. The relationship between the mind and the object creates 80 different emotions. It is these emotions that make the mind unstable, uncontrollable and nonfunctional. Right now, our mind is very nonfunctional and very fixed. It is not doing what we want; it is doing what we don’t want.
Therefore, it is important to understand these emotions, where they come from and how they affect the character of the mind. When we understand this, we can begin to apply tools to make the mind more balanced, more functional, more useful and more perfect.
During this retreat, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche will give us powerful tools to use for ourselves and also to help other people.
