The University of Oxford and Yin-Cheng Buddhist Studies Network are pleased to invite all interested parties to a conference on ‘Buddhism and Food Ethics’ to be held on 19th and 20th April 2024 at St. Antony’s College and the University of Oxford China Centre, Oxford.
The conference aims to bring together scholars and experts to share their research on food ethics, which lie at the heart of many aspects of Buddhist practice. Themes covered in the conference include the implications of revivals of alms rounds among monastics, different ethical models applied to decisions about meat and vegetarianism, the impact on increasing vegetarianism on local farming, ethical aspects of tea consumption and production, differing Tao and Buddhist values placed on the consumption of bark, the health impact of food donations, and the ethics of food preparation and ritual eating. Geographic regions and traditions covered include Chinese, Korean, Ladakhi, Sri Lankan, local and global Taiwanese, Thai, and local and global Tibetan.
