About this Event
Sam Tanenhaus has written a richly immersive biography, more than 25 years in the making, of William F. Buckley, the urbane and combative founder of National Review who was an ally of Joseph McCarthy and mentor to Ronald Reagan. Granted exclusive access to private papers, the author uncovers darker exploits as well, such as CIA missions in Latin America (with future Watergate felon E. Howard Hunt). At a crucial moment in American history, Tanenhaus offers a powerful account of the firebrand writer and polemicist who shaped the modern conservative revolution. He will appear in conversation with Dwight Garner, the New York Times critic and author (The Upstairs Delicatessen).
