Have you spotted those bright green 5-gallon buckets strapped to young trees around Des Moines? They're essential for slow-drip watering new plantings—but now that the growing season is winding down, it's time to collect them for storage and reuse next year!
Join us in supporting Trees Forever Iowa by gathering buckets from recently planted street trees in the Union Park and Capitol Park neighborhoods. It's a fun, easy way to give back, explore the area, and see our city's expanding tree canopy up close!

Treekeeper volunteers from Trees Forever, alongside community groups and the City of Des Moines, plant hundreds of street trees each season to boost our urban forest. These buckets ensure weekly watering for the first few years—your help keeps the program sustainable!
Our Plan
Meet-up Spot: Parking lot of Birdland Marina / Captain Roy's (1900 Saylor Rd)
We'll brief everyone, divide into small groups, and fan out to assigned streets.
What You'll Do: Walk the sidewalks, cut buckets free from tree trunks (using gloves & scissors/knife), empty any trash, and load them into a pickup truck for haul-away. That's it—simple, satisfying, and a great excuse for a neighborhood stroll!
What to Bring
Required: Work gloves + scissors or a utility knife (to cut twine securely)
Optional: A garbage bag for any litter inside buckets (we'll have extras on hand)
