BTG's production of the classic Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo & Juliet! This take on the classic work promises to be one for the ages. Queer people have always been here, and now more than ever, it is vital to share queer experiences and narratives. What better way to do that than to "Queer" one of the most renowned Shakespeare plays? This show aims to take a classic story and shift perspective, expand on the idea of identity, and to explore how community and those around us can have an impact on us.
In Shakespeare's own time, women were not often allowed to perform onstage. Instead, the Bard cast men and boys to play the parts of the female characters in his works. In the centuries since that time, much has changed about the world, but we still find ourselves discussing gender in performance. What better way to honor the Bard and the talented actors of his time (both those who did and those who could not perform) than turning the tables and flipping the script on his most renowned work?
