What is Shorinji Kempo
Shorinji kempo is a modern Japanese martial art that combines striking (goho), grappling (juho), restorative massage (seiho) and meditation (chinkon) into a practical system of self-defence and personal development.
It was founded in 1947 by Japanese soldier and zen monk, Doshin So. Following his experiences during the second world war, in occupied China and on return to a defeated Japan, Doshin So set out to equip young people with the skills and determination to stand up for others, and to promote a practical philosophy of mutual happiness and cooperation.
The new art spread quickly across Japan in the 1950s and around the globe in the '60s and '70s, and was brought to the UK in 1974. It is still taught and practiced today all over the world.
