About this Event

The Institution of Structural Engineers East Midlands Hub invites you to this year’s Annual Joint IStructE/ICE Technical Meeting, featuring a presentation on BSI Flex 350 and the growing potential of decarbonised alternatives to traditional concrete.

Concrete production is responsible for around 8% of global CO₂emissions, creating a significant environmental challenge. BSI Flex 350–Alternative Binder Systems for Lower Carbon Concrete provides a practical code of practice to help engineers identify viable low‑carbon substitutes and demonstrate their performance.

As a performance‑based standard, BSI Flex 350 enables the assessment of innovative mixes that fall outside existing British Standards, provided they meet its rigorous criteria. This approach broadens the range of materials that can be confidently specified, tested, and used in construction.

The standard also aligns with major low‑carbon commitments made this year by the Infrastructure Client Group and the Construction Leadership Council, supporting the industry’s transition toward more sustainable construction practices.

Speakers

Peter Winslow, Director Expedition Engineering

Pete is a chartered structural engineer and leads the R&D Construction Innovation team at Expedition and is also on the USL executive board.

He has worked with a range of clients from design to delivery. Pete took the lead on the record-breaking Old Oak Common Station for HS2, which is set to be the best connected and largest new railway station ever built in the UK. He also heads up our portfolio of innovation work with Network Rail including delivering real cost and carbon savings to Network Rail’s network-wide renewals with his expertise. He advises the Environment Agency on engineering-led decarbonisation initiatives.

Carbon savings and efficiency engineering are a passion of Pete’s. He takes practical steps to help the industry achieve sustainability goals by leading the mobilisation team for the UK Concrete Decarbonisation Taskforce. He is also an external advisor on the technical committee for CARES UK Reinforcing Steel Sustainability, and is an external peer reviewer for GCB Low Carbon Concrete Route Map.

Jon Knights is the Materials and Durability Lead for HS2, a crucial role focused on ensuring the quality, performance, and sustainability of materials used in Britain's new high-speed railway, notably championing digital innovations like the Verifi system for concrete testing to reduce waste, cut carbon, and improve construction efficiency and safety. He holds advanced degrees in Geomaterials and has extensive experience in the concrete and construction sectors. Jon is a Fellow of the Concrete Society (FCS) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) and a Chartered Scientist (CSci).
