Title
“Tulaga: A Place to Stand?” Decolonisation and Pacific Indigeneity.
Abstract
The concept of indigeneity is challenging to define empirically, as it encompasses aspects such as ethnicity, majority-minority dynamics, and, notably in anthropology, what are often referred to as First Peoples (J. Sissons, 2005) or urfolk (see Saugestad and Kuper for more). The complexities are further compounded by the political and ideological landscapes of post-colonial states, where issues of governance play a significant role. This presentation will utilize the framework of decolonization to illuminate how evolving perspectives on decolonization itself influence our understanding of indigeneity. Examples will be drawn from Polynesian-speaking regions of the Pacific, highlighting the fraught interplay between these concepts over time.
