HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026!
Yadkin County Historical & Genealogical Society extends an invitation to our genealogical and history-minded members and friends to take this opportunity to study the early arrivals in the 4-county area known as the Bryan Settlement. Named for its founding family, that of Morgan Bryan (1671-1763) and his wife Martha Strode, their grown children and their spouses, his initial land surveys numbered thousands of acres. Nor did he embark on the acquisition of property naively: Morgan Bryan and some of his partners had jointly invested in over 10,000 acres in Occoquan, Virginia, most of which they disposed of before their move to North Carolina. Advanced in age, Morgan Bryan kept enough land in North Carolina to live on the rest of his life and to bequeath to his numerous offspring at his passing.
We plan our first interest group meeting for Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 9:30 am, with “coffee & donuts” at Historic Huntsville Baptist Church, 4901 Courtney-Huntsville Rd, Yadkinville, NC 27055.
. So that we all start on the same page, the first meeting will focus on geography, specifically, North Carolina Land Grants. Andrew will bring the large county maps, handouts, including short lists of the earliest speculators, lists of resources, and an overview of the processes and terminology involved in scouting, surveying, purchasing, and recording land in North Carolina, 1738 – 1778. Bring your curiosity, and you can bring your laptop. Share your own findings with those of other enthusiasts.
When we have wrapped up this initial meeting, weather permitting, we will have an opportunity to visit a couple of historic sites pertaining to the Bryan Family. They are on private lands, and we have arranged with the owners to permit visitors to the first home site and two burial grounds on Saturday, the 10th of January 2026.
We will be emailing further information as soon as possible, so we will need to know how many people plan to attend either the meeting and/or the road trip. A modest donation will be asked of visitors to help cover our and our hosts’ expenses. YCH&GS will also be accepting new & renewed memberships for 2026. Questions??? Please email me, Bambi Bond Mackie, [email protected].
May your health be good, your spirits high, and your travels be safe throughout the new year.
