About this Event
Join artist Ruth Egon for a full-day immersive painting workshop focused on expressive mixed-media painting on a large canvas. This workshop is designed for anyone wanting to deepen their creativity, build confidence at scale, and enjoy a truly nourishing day of art-making.
Participants will create a bespoke, one-of-a-kind artwork tailored to their own tastes and creative vision. With guidance throughout the day, you’ll be encouraged to choose a colour palette, mood, and aesthetic that feels right for you and your home. As your large-scale artwork will be finished, ready to take home, and ready to hang, you’ll leave not only with new skills and confidence, but with a meaningful piece of art created especially for you.
To ensure a fully immersive and supportive creative experience, this workshop is limited to just 6 participants. The small group setting allows Ruth to offer individual guidance, encouragement, and hands-on support throughout the day, helping you develop your ideas with confidence and care. Running once every three months, this workshop is a rare opportunity to step away from everyday life, slow down, and fully immerse yourself in a focused day of creativity, learning, and personal expression.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is open to all levels and is especially suited to beginners who want to build confidence and experience the satisfaction of creating a finished artwork, as well as those who haven’t made art for a while and are looking to reconnect with their creativity. Ruth’s supportive, encouraging teaching style removes pressure and perfectionism, allowing you to work at your own pace, explore freely, and enjoy the process. No prior experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to immerse yourself in a day of creative play and discovery.

The day begins with Ruth fuelling participants’ inspiration, guiding you through idea generation and showing you how to prepare and approach a large canvas in a way that feels exciting rather than intimidating. You’ll explore how to develop your own visual ideas, loosen up creatively, and work intuitively from the very start.
Ruth will then lead a session on scale and composition, encouraging experimentation and playful exploration, helping you understand how to make bold, expressive choices that work powerfully on a larger surface.
Midway through the day, the group will break for a traditional British Sunday Roast at Embers, Brighton, with the meal included in the workshop price. Liberation Art Gallery has partnered with Embers to offer workshop guests a choice of beautifully prepared meat or vegetarian roast dinners, cooked over fire using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. This relaxed and flavour-filled lunch provides the perfect opportunity to refuel, unwind, and connect with fellow creatives.
In the afternoon, you’ll return to the studio to bring your ideas to life. Using gouache paint, oil pastels, expressive mark-making, foiling, and mixed media techniques, you’ll work on your own large canvas, layering materials and learning how to transform observations and ideas into a finished artwork that feels personal and meaningful.
Throughout the day, Ruth will support you in developing observation skills, translating inspiration into visual language, and embracing your own artistic voice. You’ll leave with a completed large-scale artwork, new techniques, renewed confidence, and a deep sense of creative satisfaction.
This workshop is about immersing yourself in creativity, learning new skills, slowing down, and treating yourself to a day of art, nourishment, and inspiration.
Liberation Art Gallery also offers an optional Artist’s Experience, giving participants the opportunity to have their finished artwork exhibited in the gallery for 7 days.
