Host: Chanel Arrington

Info: Chanel Arrington is an author, entrepreneur, and advocate who was inspired to write her children's book, Clemmie: Walter Clement Noel and the Discovery of Sickle Cell Disease, by her youngest daughter, who lives with the condition. She will introduce our keynote speaker.


Keynote Presentation
Host: Dr. Todd L. Savitt

Info: Dr. Savitt is a distinguished medical historian specializing in African-American medical history. He holds a BA from Colgate University and earned his MA and PhD in history from the University of Virginia. He joined the Department of Bioethics and Interdisciplinary Studies at The Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University (ECU), where he lectures on the history of medicine, narrative medicine, and medical ethics.
Dr. Savitt's many publications cover the health of the enslaved, the history of sickle-cell anemia, medical experimentation on African Americans, the history of black physicians, and early African-American medical schools. At ECU, he founded a theater program that engages through medical stories. He chaired the History of Medicine Grants Panel for the National Library of Medicine and served as Secretary/Treasurer of the American Association for the History of Medicine. He currently chairs the North Carolina Governor’s Appointed Council on Sickle Cell Syndrome.
