Hosted by the Montana Law Review, the 2022 Browning Symposium: Montana's Constitution: The Next 50 Years will explore and celebrate the Montana Constitution as it turns fifty. The Montana Law Review is proud to announce that this year’s Browning Symposium will be the official Constitution Day celebration of the University of Montana and will feature an incredible lineup of academics, practitioners, judges, and experts on the Montana Constitution who will highlight how Montana is a model for the nation as state constitutions begin to take center stage. The agenda for the 2-day event is as follows:

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2022
- 7:00 p.m. - From 1972 to 2022: The Past and Future of Montana's Constitution. Panelists: Mae Nan Ellingson, delegate to the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention; Hon. James Nelson, retired Justice of the Montana Supreme Court; and legendary Montana journalist Chuck Johnson.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2022
- 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. - Opening Keynote Speaker Chief Judge Jeffrey Sutton, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
- 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. – Voting, Elections, and the Constitutional Future of Democracy in Montana. Panelists: Miriam Siefter, Associate Professor of Law, Wisconsin University; Co-Director of the State Democracy Initiative; Yael Bromberg, a lecturer at Rutgers Law School, and an expert in civil rights, constitutional law, and election law issues; Joshua Douglas – Distinguished Professor of Law, University of Kansas Rosenburg College of Law; and E. Lars Phillips, an Associate with Crowley Fleck PLLP, a recent graduate of the University of Montana School of Law.
- 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - The Shape of Montana's Constitution: Structure, Interpretation, and Federal Lock-Stepping, moderated by Justice Laurie McKinnon. Panelists: Robert Williams, Distinguished Professor of Law, Rutgers; and Joel Krautter, Attorney at Netzer Law and Fmr. Montana Representative, House District 35.

- 1:30 p.m.–3:15 p.m. - The Shifting Foundations of Privacy: Individual Autonomy and Reproductive Healthcare in Montana, moderated by Hon. Justice Jim Nelson. Panelists: Caitlin Borgmann, Executive Director of Montana ACLU; and John Dinan, Professor of Law, Wake Forrest University.
- 3:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. - A Declaration of Rights: The Future of Montana's Liberties and Freedoms, moderated by Hon. Leslie Halligan. Panelists: Constance Van Kley, Litigation Director at Upper Seven Law; Joel Krautter, Attorney at Netzer Law and Fmr. Montana Representative, House District 35; Anthony Sanders, Director of Center For Judicial Engagement at the Institute for Justice; and Emily Zackin, Associate Professor of Political Science, John Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
