About this Event

Please join us at Dayton Metro Library's Main Branch for an exciting afternoon to celebrate Black History Month on Saturday, January 22nd from 1:00-3:00 pm. This film screening will be located on the 3rd floor in the Bassani Theather located in the library.

Brown Hands, Black Schools: HBCUs is an engaging, educational and fun animated short film with live-action scenes highlighting the rich history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the importance of literacy. The film takes us on an adventure with Aria and Walter as they visit their cousin’s HBCU for homecoming. We get to see them walk the yard, watch the football game, and enjoy the band. We learn that HBCUs produce 80 percent of the nation’s Black judges, as well as half of the country’s Black doctors and lawyers! This film was a 2024 ESSENCE official selection at the ESSENCE Film Festival.

Production Team

Brown Hands, Black Scholls HBCUs film is based on the children's book of the same name by CSU alumna, Latoya Turner. Latoya is the executive producer, director, and writer of Brown Hands, Black Schools: HBCUs film. Dayton's own, Angela K. Davis is the producer and co- writer of the film.
