About this Event

Get RED CARPET ready because Summer reading for kids is getting better and this fun, literacy event is all about the kids!

From kid-friendly red carpet interviews, face painting, balloon characters, science expos, and a reading of the books by Dr. Gurley and her 14-yrs old protege, Morgen Peters, to having their purchased books signed by the author herself, this event will set the tone for supporting child literacy.

Professional Speaker and Best Selling and World Renowned Author, Dr. Pamela Gurley has recently released the first two books in the 10-titled 20 books Brown Girl and Brown Boy children's series, Brown Girl, Be Social and Brown Boy, Be Social, on June 3, 2021. These books are all about children embracing their social differences while maintaining self-acceptance, self-confidence, and self-love.

Literacy is important and what better way to contribute to summer reading than having Black and Brown kids see themselves in the books they read. As Dr. Gurley says, “Representation is not just about color. It is also about culturally setting a standard of excellence for our children.”

ABOUT THE SERIES:

Brown Girl and Brown Boy is a 10-title. 20 book children’s series addressing some of the children’s greatest challenges. From learning how to be social to be confident to know their worth and from being body-positive to seeing themselves in professional roles not often shown up in books. And these are only a few areas mentioned that this series will embrace.

A part of the 10-book series, are three special edition books specifically for Black and Brown children with Down Syndrome, Autism (or other social diagnoses), and children with Physical Disabilities.

Representation is a significant factor for many children of color, and it is important for them to see themselves in books that aid in their mental, emotional, and physical development.

The second set in the series, Brown Girl, Break Barriers, and Brown Boy, Break Barriers, is set to release on September 3, 2021.
