Everyone agreed electrical power was essential for a town like Creston. That idea shows up time and time again – in letters to the editor, in discussions of community leaders, at Board of Trade meetings, in advertisements promoting the valley and all it offered. And that’s why, in 1908, the Creston Power, Light, and Telephone Company was established to get things moving towards electrification as quickly as possible. So why, then, do we have people still living today who remember having to clean the chimneys of coal-oil lamps on a daily basis? Why, as children, did they complain that “it was always dark at Grandma’s house?” Or have to sell the electric washing machine when they moved here from somewhere else?
Let’s just say – despite the early enthusiasm, it took a while for electrical power to actually arrive in Creston. Join us on Saturday, January 24 to find out more!
Admission is free for members; $5 for non-members.
