About this Event
Introducing Youth and Adults of Color to Tech
Technology is everywhere today, but only a tiny fraction of students are learning how to create technology. Brothers Code is part of the larger movement to introduce youth to tech as part of National Computer Science Education Week.
The Hidden Genius Project and Kapor Center invite young people of color in middle and high school to join the 12th Annual Brothers Code event, Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Michigan Math and Science Academy Dequindre 27300 Dequindre Rd, Warren, MI 48092. This event is meant to expose young people to skills and networks that can guide them to exciting opportunities within the tech sector.
At this event, youth participants will:
- Play with technology while practicing coding and programming skills
- Explore the vast range of career opportunities within the tech sector
- Learn about the various opportunity pathways that can lead to participation in the tech sector
- Investigate the various ways they can leverage technology to strengthen their communities and reach their goals
- Network with enthusiastic tech sector professionals from a range of backgrounds
We will also host a concurrent program for adults! We invite parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, counselors, champions, and any other interested adults to register to participate in their own simultaneous program. The adult sessions will help student advocates learn how they might support young people to pursue technology pathways (and participants will get to practice some of the technical skills as well!).
There will also be a session for adult stakeholders to discuss how they might actively support youth entrepreneurs to leverage their skills and ideas to build out their own ventures.
Volunteers
We will need general, non-technical volunteers to help with event set-up, people movement, food set-up and distribution, registration, and basic support of the program participants. We also need volunteers to support implementation of the youth and adult program sessions, which include technical skills activities, entrepreneurship projects, and exploration of career pathways.
