Brookhaven’s ninth annual MLK Day Dinner and Celebration returns Monday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m. to Lynwood Recreation Center, the site of the segregated Lynwood Schools whose students bravely integrated into the DeKalb School System in 1968. The event is a tribute to the Lynwood Trailblazers and includes keynote speaker Monica Pearson, dinner, giveaways, live performances, and special guests.
Monica Kaufman Pearson is the first woman and first minority to anchor the daily evening news in metro Atlanta, where she worked for 37 years at WSB-TV. She now hosts and produces “Monica Pearson One on One,” a monthly personality interview program airing on Peachtree TV. She has won more than 33 Southern Regional and local Emmy Awards for reporting, anchoring, and her “Closeups” celebrity interview show. She is also a member of the NATAS Silver Circle. When she retired, Pearson was honored on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives by the bipartisan delegation of the State of Georgia for her years of service on and off the air to improve the lives of the residents of Georgia.
Tickets to the event are $10 each and can be purchased at Lynwood Recreation Center, 3360 Osborne Road, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., or by calling 404-637-0542.
