In a typically imaginative sequence, the Brodsky Quartet present Rachmaninov’s visionary, proto-Minimalist Two Movements for String Quartet No. 2 through the prism of his Russian and European contemporaries. There’s Debussy’s indelibly sensuous quartet, Stravinsky’s Three Pieces, whose ‘Canticle’ he said was the finest piece he had written to date, and Shostakovich’s Two Pieces, which veer from tragedy to hilarity. Britten’s punchy first quartet invigorated the repertoire, while Rachmaninov’s haunting Vocalise encapsulates his genius for song.
