About this Event
A choice of two days, either 13th or 14th of January 2026: If you don't have time for long-term volunteering, Volunteer Action Days are the perfect way to get a taste of what’s involved in carrying out practical conservation in the Broads National Park. January's activity is vegetation management with hand tools and burning the cut material on small bonfires at Cary's Meadow.
Cary’s Meadow is a Local Nature Reserve with a mosaic of habitats including open grassland, scrub and mature trees, providing a haven for wildlife on the edge of Norwich. Bramble is a key component of the ecosystem, providing food and refuge for mammals, birds and invertebrates, but dense thickets smother the more delicate wildflowers and grasses that are also important. Each year, the Broads Authority cuts a different area to ensure a mixture of young and mature bushes is retained across the site. During January's Volunteer Action Days, you will help us to clear an area of tall, mature bramble with hand tools and burn the cut stems on small bonfires.
All training, safety information and suitable protective footwear and gloves will be provided but you'll need to bring waterproofs, warm clothing, and food and drink for the day. Spaces are limited so book today to secure a place.
