About this Event

OIGs Look to AI, Other Tech to Improve Operations

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) serves as the internal watchdog for all federal departments and agencies. The 74 inspectors general are broadly responsible for preventing and detecting fraud, waste, abuse, misconduct, and mismanagement in their domains, and promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in operations and programs.

The Department of Health and Human Services OIG, for instance, employs more than 1,600 public servants to provide oversight for HHS’s over $1 trillion portfolio of health and human services programs. The HHS OIG strategic plan for 2020-2025, for instance, is working to build on detection capabilities by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to better predict the potential for fraud, waste, and abuse. At the same time, the use of generative AI and other advanced technologies to perpetrate scams and financial fraud is growing.

Join us as thought leaders from government and industry discuss how OIGs are using innovative new technologies to streamline their operations, the privacy and cybersecurity regulations they are required to meet, and their use of sophisticated new tools to identify external fraud and internal waste.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline the capabilities of AI and machine learning as they can be applied to improving internal operations
  • Delineate the essential role of cybersecurity to protect both the OIGs’ infrastructure and the privacy and security of individuals’ personal information
  • Review current infrastructure issues and constraints and the steps OIGs are taking to remedy legacy technology debt
