Coldstream to Berwick.
About this Event

This is the third in a series of three lectures called Footsteps in our Landscape Part I, which looks at different aspects of how people have moved through our local landscape in the past. The series is organised in association with Berwick Literary Festival and is inspired by some of the themes of 2024's Festival, particularly our local landscape, its history and how we move through it. You can see all three lectures here.

Bridges are an integral part of our landscape, helping us to cross rivers and other obstacles on journeys from A to B. In this lecture, which is in association with Friends of Berwick and District Museum and Archive, Linda Bankier will consider the history of bridges on the lower River Tweed from Coldstream down to Berwick-upon-Tweed. When and how were they built, who has maintained them and why build a bridge in the first place. Original archive material kept in the Berwick Record Office and elsewhere will be used to answer these questions and much more.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Linda Bankier MA, DAA, is the Berwick Archivist, running the Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office for the Northumberland Archives Service. She studied German and Latin at St Andrew’s University before completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Archive Administration.

Tea and coffee will be served, and all are welcome. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.

All bookings are subject to our Terms and Conditions. If you book this course online, we will hold your personal data in accordance with our privacy policy. If you do not wish us to hold your personal data, please book by post (see www.berwickea.co.uk) and do not supply an email address.
