Course Description:

Understanding gait models and closed chain functional gait biomechanics is essential in properly assessing gait dysfunctions and selecting the most appropriate intervention to optimize gait outcomes. This course differentiates between two different classifications of footdrop and the three categories of apropulsive gait. It reviews two biomechanical models to form a scientific basis for decision making. It then discusses interventions that can be designed to overcome specific gait deficits, using a top-down and bottom-up approach. There will be emphasis on managing gait dysfunctions relating to soft tissue dysfunctions and to partial foot amputations.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the attendee will be able to· Identify causes, symptoms, and compensation of apropulsive gait· Describe impact of immobilizing AFOs on the propulsive deficit· Select orthotic interventions that restore propulsive function to gait· Utilize gait retraining principles so patients take advantage of the intervention
