This Sunday April 6th, at 4:30pm at Queen St Brewhouse, I'll be screening the epic The Mission (1986), directed by Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) and written by Robert Bolt (Lawrence of Arabia). The film stars Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Ray McAnally, Aidan Quinn, Cherie Lunghi, and Liam Neeson. The Mission is a historical drama film about a Jesuit missionary in 18th-century South America and an ex-slave trader who joins them. The film also tells the story of the plight of the indigenous people during the time of colonization and focuses on themes such as christianity, redemption, and sacrifice. Ennio Morricone's stunning score, which was nominated for an Academy Award, features the maestro's most notable works, e.g., "Gabriel's Oboe".Before Ennio Morricone took on the role as composer for The Mission (1986), he initially rejected it as he was profoundly moved by a preview cut of the film and felt that the imagery was too strong. In Giuseppe Tornatore's documentary Ennio: The Maestro (2021), Morricone recalls his first reactions to the film "The movie was so beautiful without music, I could only ruin it". Some time later, after Morricone returned to Rome, director Roland Joffé received a telephone call from him saying, "I have a little idea," and started to sing the theme for Gabriel's Oboe.
