UNIVERSITY LECTURE SEASON 2024-2025
THE FIELD/SPICER ENDOWMENT IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING - Breakthroughs and Innovations: Recent Advances in Alzheimer’s Disease Research
Guest speaker Nicholas Kanaan, Ph.D.
Tue. Apr. 22 6:30 p.m. | Malcolm Field Theatre (Curtiss Hall)
Over the past several years there have been important advances in the basic science and clinical research fields for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Kanaan will highlight those advances and discuss some of the specific work undertaken in his lab in the context of those advances.
== SPEAKER BIO ==
Nicholas Kanaan is a professor of translational neuroscience and the inaugural Maibach Smiley Professor of Alzheimer’s Research at Michigan State University. He is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease and tau, a protein that accumulates in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s. In 2010, Kanaan started his laboratory in the Department of Translational Neuroscience within Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. His lab studies aging-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Studies in the Kanaan lab focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying degenerative diseases and exploring therapeutic strategies through a combination of experimental approaches. More recently, Kanaan’s research has expanded to include studying and developing biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Kanaan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience, psychology and sociology from Central Michigan University, and he holds a Ph.D. in neurological sciences from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
