About this Event

The Birmingham Repertory Theatre is 110 years old this year, years in which it has seen two unique theatres designed and built, two world wars, funding crises, riots and our own recent pandemic. The theatre’s founder, Sir Barry Jackson, was determined to foster talent in all aspects of his theatre’s life and this principle, in his own life and legacy, has ensured that throughout these same 110 years a number of ‘Notable Women’ have graced the Rep’s two stages, kept it going in times of war and written, designed, stage-managed and directed its productions.

These women played distinctive roles in the REP’s development– some were in at the start: Margaret Chatwin, with her ‘scorching eloquence, and truly tragic power’, on stage, Maud Gill, an accomplished actor, yes, but who also stepped up to become the first female stage manager of the English theatre, later came Nancy Burman who became Jackson’s ‘right-hand woman’, she ensured the REP’s continued success as it moved towards its second half-century and , after Jackson’s death, ensured his legacy was remembered in the creation of our current Rep theatre. In following decades, Pamela Howard designed a Carnaby Street As You Like It award-winning director Gwenda Hughes introduced controversial colour-blind casting with her black Juliet (Josette Bushell-Mingo) and writer Bryony Lavery’s harrowing play Frozen premiered at the Rep and became a major success.

These are just a few of the women, who as actors, writers, directors and managers, whose careers were enabled and furthered by the Rep also enabled and furthered the success and continuation of The Birmingham Repertory Theatre itself.

Come and hear more about these ‘Notable Women’ and others who have played ground-breaking roles in the life of The Birmingham Rep!.

The event will commence at 1700 with a welcome reception and an opportunity to network. The talk will commence at 1730 to 1830 followed by an exclusive backstage tour.
