About this Event
While nearly 35% of students in Minnesota identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color, the teacher workforce across the state has remained at a stagnant 6%. We know that systemic barriers prevent many people of color from becoming educators each year, but solutions either fall woefully short or fail to include the experiences and needs of the people of color who are experiencing the obstacles.
To identify the barriers that prevent teachers of color educators from entering the teaching profession, EdAllies convened a Community Action Team (CAT). The CAT cohort was made up of aspiring Black educators dedicated to identifying ongoing barriers and gaps in support that keep candidates from joining the workforce and providing actionable recommendations on how best to break those barriers down and improve current practice.
Join us on Tuesday, June 25 from 5:30-7:30pm at UROC to hear directly from the aspiring educators who built the report, discussing their experiences and the impact on their career trajectories. Cohort members will participate in a panel discussion on their experiences navigating the teacher preparation process, give personal stories on the barriers they faced, and discuss the supports needed to encourage other prospective Black educators to enter the profession. We will then summarize the report's findings and discuss tangible next steps to build a diverse teaching workforce in Minnesota.
