Ambassador Cynthia GH King ... Like me, I'm sure you care deeply about our country. Yet, today we are deeply divided by our political beliefs. We don't simply disagree; we have difficulty talking to family members and old friends unless we're sure they agree with us on politics. Being this divided hurts our ability to work together and find cooperative, even creative solutions to those very things we disagree about. Many people are so certain that the "other side," whichever side that is, is so unreasonable that they aren't worth talking to. Others say, "Just never talk about religion or politics." Neither of these can work for long.
We live in a democratic republic, and without the ability to discuss and understand the concerns of people we disagree with, and give them an opportunity to hear the same from us without either side being personally attacked, we can rarely make progress in any area. Even when we make progress, it's likely to be reversed at the next opportunity if it wasn't based on mutual respect, understanding, and the search for common ground.
I invite you to join me in learning open channels of communication and making it possible to have better relationships with people on different sides of the political divide.
Please join me and others on Monday, Feb. 24, 6:30pm at Rm 114 Roush Hall, Otterbein University.
We will share and practice some skills for listening to reduce the toxicity affecting our nation so we can each be part of moving our country forward.
Braver Angels is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering positive dialogue among people with different views and reducing the “affective polarization," the emotions and attitudes, that keep us apart.
