A physically distanced walk to raise funds for youth mental health in Dundee!
About this Event
Time to get your hats, scarfs, masks, gloves and comfy shoes on for a good cause!

Stride with pride by taking part in Feeling Strong's third annual 'Brave The Cold' walk! By taking part in the 5-mile walk from the V&A to Broughty Ferry Castle you'll be showing your commitment to supporting some of Dundee's most vulnerable young people. All of the money you raise will have an impact in your local community, empowering Feeling Strong to increase our impact for young people struggling with their mental health and wellbeing challenges.

We're inviting everyone to get involved, to get their friends involved, to get their kids involved, to get their families involved, workplaces, schools, sports clubs, societies and so on! What matters is that you take a stand and brave the cold for a cause that matters!

There is no cost to sign up, and there are limited edition 'Brave the Cold' Feeling Strong t-shirts available for anyone who raises more than £50 through donations, fundraising and sponsorships!

How is this different from previous years?

It goes without saying that the world we live in is very different from when we first ran Brave The Cold, so this year we are going to continue to do whatever we can to support participants in keeping themselves safe! You can choose when you'd like to walk, who you'd like to walk with and how quickly you'd like to do it - this year it's up to you guys, but we're still here to help.

How we can help you stay safe if you would like to take part:
  1. As last year we'll be running the event over the whole weekend this year to avoid crowding.
  2. Physical distancing and good hygiene will be encouraged at all times if you are taking part in the walk.
  3. This year we will not have a staffed Start Line, Finish Line or have Pit Stops along the route so that we can avoid unnecessary contact. Members of the Feeling Strong team will not be present during the course of the event.
  4. This year we won't be hosting an event with food and entertainment at the Finish Line, but please feel free to have your own sensible celebrations!
  5. We would encourage participants to download the Scottish Government's Protect-Scot app if they have smart phones.
  6. We will keep up to date with any local restrictions or government guidance to make sure that we are doing things by the book!

Got questions? Don't worry, we have answers:

Who are Feeling Strong?

We exist to make sure that every young person in Dundee who has experienced a mental health or wellbeing challenge is supported to reach their full potential. We deliver projects, services and campaigns in the community to tackle stigma, build confidence, develop resources, create networks and most importantly support the positive recovery journey of our young people. For more information please feel free to look at our social media channels or website, linked below.

What is the route? When do I show up?

Our Starting Line for the 5-mile route is at the V&A on the River Esplanade and our Finish Line Hub is at Broughty Ferry Castle, walking along the waterfront using public paths (specifically National Cycle Network Route 1). More information about the full route will be circulated to participants via email, and the route will be signposted.

Because this year we will be doing the walk physically distanced and over the course of the weekend, when you choose to start is up to you! However we would advise you to walk during sensible hours and with day light.

What do I have to bring, can I drop my stuff off?

We won't have access to lockers, so we encourage you to bring a bag or bag pack for the things we suggest you bring:

  • Snacks and drinks
  • Masks and hand sanitiser
  • Umbrella and/or rain jacket
  • Scarf, hat and gloves
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Anything else that you may find useful!

Do I have to walk it all at once? Is it a race?

We are keen to make this event as accessible as possible for different abilities and levels of physical fitness - you can take the walk at your own pace, and we expect that most participants will take between 1 hour 30 mins and 2 hours 30 mins to complete the route. If there are any adjustments that we can make for a participant with a disability then please get in touch at [email protected] for further support.

How do I collect donations? What about Gift Aid?

We recommend that participants take digital donations - you can set up a Golden Giving donation page here or by using Facebook's giving tools here. You can also take physical donations of cash, just print our sponsorship sheet that will be sent to you by email after you sign up. Gift Aid is a government scheme were we can claim an extra 25% on top of any donation, the donator just has to be eligible. Information regarding eligibility will be on your Sponsorship Sheets and on any our donation platforms.

What are the health and safety arrangements?

We will not have First-aiders available to help on the day because this is a Physically Distanced event, however if there is an extreme emergency then please urgently contact emergency services by calling 999.

I can't come walk the day, can I still contribute?

There are plenty of ways you can help! You can donate to other walkers, encourage friends, family and work mates to take part, collect donations on their behalf, promote the event on social media, encourage your employer to sponsor the event, or if you have any other ideas of how to help then get in touch!

Who can I talk to if I have more questions?

If you would like to get in touch for more questions, contributions or press enquiries then please email [email protected] so we can send you a response as soon as possible. We are also happy to accept questions over any of our social media channels, linked below.

Other stuff:

Please keep the route clean, there will be bins along the route so there is no excuse to litter.

This is a dry event and any participant found to be drinking or under the influence will be asked to leave. If you are a smoker, please be considerate of other participants along the route.

We will be available to answer queries during the hours of 1000-1600 during the weekend event, you can contact us via any of our social media channels or via email.

Please keep hydrated!

Dogs are more than welcome, just remember to pick up any... mess.
