Brassroots District: Live in the Lot Summer ‘73 is an immersive music experience that transports audiences to the heyday of LA’s legendary funk music scene. While a bangin’ 9-piece funk band plays a full concert live on stage, a story unfolds throughout the venue, pulling audience members to the very center of the action.

It’s 1973: The Summer of Love is a memory and Nixon is bugging out in the White House. But the war is over, the California sun is shinin’, and LA is the funkiest town this side of the stratosphere.

That’s the vibe when Brassroots District arrives on the scene. A funk outfit helmed by the fabulously far out ex-lovers Copper Jones and Ursa Major, Brassroots District is making unity and community through sweet soul music from Crenshaw Boulevard to the Sunset Strip. Now they’ve got record execs sniffing around, a growing fanclub, and a sweet summer gig opening the parking lot for Sly and the Family Stone.

The only thing missing is you, ya dig?

This summer, boogie on down to the DTLA Arts District to groove with Brassroots District. While the nine-piece band brings the funk onstage, who knows who you'll meet in the crowd? The story unfolds all around you as a colorful cast of 70s characters pulls you into the world of the band.

Grab your friends, dress to impress in your finest vintage threads, and we'll see you in the Brassroots District!

FAQ

Is Brassroots District a real band?

Of course they are.

BRD is a modern homage to classic interracial and mixed-gender funk bands like Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic, and KC and the Sunshine Band. The players are some of LA's top studio and live musicians, all united by a love of funk!

What should I wear?

This is the perfect time to bust out your grooviest threads! Dressing in your 70s finest will get you deeper into the funk. Mostly though? Wear whatever will have you feeling good vibes. We recommend comfortable shoes - it’s a parking lot after all - and layers. That Cali sun can be hot in the afternoon, but things cool down after dark.

What should I bring?

The Funk.

What should I NOT bring?

It’s 1973. The only phone in your life is attached to a wall and has a rotary dial. We kindly ask you to leave mobile phones at home or in the car, or we can provide a blackout bag for you so you’re not distracted during the performance. Don't worry, we'll take plenty of photos for you!

Please also refrain from bringing in:

  • Outside food & drink
  • Pets
  • Cameras
  • Weapons of any kind

Is vaccination required?

To protect our performers and crew, and your fellow audience members, a photo ID plus proof of vaccination OR proof of a negative Covid-test within 72 hours of doors is required. Our plan at this time is to let all concertgoers be maskless - vaccination helps us make this happen!

Will the experience be COVID-safe?

We will be following CDC guidelines and COVID protocols. The main action takes place outdoors; an optional indoor area is open-air.

Please note that these guidelines change regularly. We plan to provide an update with more details after June 15th.

What about parking?

Multiple paid lots are available in the Arts District. Street parking, though often free, can be challenging in the area. We recommend ride share or Metro. Use the intersection of 4th St & Hewitt St to plan your trip.

Is the event accessible?

The experience takes place on street level, no stairs required. If you require accommodations to help you have a great experience, please contact us!
