In association with Durham Miners’ Association Brass Band Murton Theatre Group will be starting read throughs for our centenary drama production of "Brassed Off" on Wednesday November 13th at the New Hesledon Club Murton (better know locally as the Top Club Murton ) https://maps.app.goo.gl/centx4uRLZ6Xt2tn7
Initially the first couple of read throughs will be for adults only on the 13th and 20th November - once the adults are cast I will have an open night for the children and more importantly their parents due to the content and language involved in the show)
All welcome to come along and read for any of the roles - a brief synopsis of characterisations of each roles follows.
Brassed Off characterisations
Gloria – mid 20’s – the granddaughter of ex band leader and good friend of the current bandleader Danny – British Coal quantity surveyor – romantically linked with band member ‘Andy’
Andy – mid 20’s miner – Tenor Horn player – not very good at snooker though he tries his best – always late for everything – romantically linked with Gloria
Danny – past miner , now retired in his 70’s – leader of the band – straight talking – COPD sufferer – was best mates with Goria’s late granddad – Dad of Phil and father in law to Sandra – grandad of Shane
Sandra – early to mid 40’s – tough matriarch of the family but a nurturing mother figure to 4 children – wife of Phil
Phil – early to mid 40’s. Ineffectual miner – very poor financially (still paying off debts from the Miners strike ten years earlier – will try anything to look after his family but keeps making mistakes
Harry and Jim – Two stalwart band members and lifelong friends (both miners) – Jim is very opinionated at times – they work hard, play hard – husbands of Rita and Vera – indeterminate age but between 40 to 55
Rita and Vera – Their wives – inseparable friends – devoted to their husbands but nevertheless are the ‘power house’ of each of their relationships
Shane – nine year old son of Sandra and Phil and grandson of Danny – the story is told through his recollections of the time – he is the pivot of the whole show
Two further children – approx. eight and seven – minor non speaking roles – supposed to be boy and girl but could equally be two girls
Nurse and Matron – minor roles – indeterminant ages albeit I see a younger nurse and an older Sister/Matron
Various other roles for bailiffs, miners voting in ballot, wives or daughters of the menfolk picketing the pit
Any parents of children who are interested in the role of Shane please contact me directly on whatsapp or facebook messenger or by texting 07753 210843
