Contact Improvisation – The Expansion of Self: Part I and II
Contact Improvisation is a somatic form of dance. The workshops involve an opportunity to bring new awareness to one’s movement and sense of self. By connecting with ourselves, we can better connect to our first partner (the ground) and our second partner (the person we’re dancing with). We’ll explore our attention, our distribution of weight, our level of relaxation, and the impact of stillness and motion on our inner and outer worlds. The workshops include a time to jam (dancing with others in a free flowing way) as well as the inner development necessary to create an expanded connection to oneself. Questions like, “What do you include as yourself?” are characteristic of these workshops.

Anthony has been a contact improvisation dancer since 2015. He stumbled upon his first class while traveling in Bali and immediately fell in love. Craving to do more, he attended Mark Young’s two-week workshop at Leviathan Studios, situated near Vancouver Island on the West Coast of Canada. This intensive cemented his love of the form. Anthony continued to find opportunities to dance ever since, attending workshops at Salt Spring Island, and teaching in Kelowna, British Columbia. As new people came in to strengthen the Kelowna scene, Anthony’s life changed with a sudden move to Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He’s ready to share his joy of contact improvisation in this new community.
