SYNOPSIS
Sobia Shaheen Shaikh’s “Braiding Peonies” follows a Muslim family navigating the aftermath of a racist, anti-Muslim hate incident in St. John’s, NL. When Samreen and their friends are targeted in an Islamophobic assault, their mother Sadiqa pursues legal action. Samreen, however, turns to a Muslim anti-racist and abolitionist collective. Their diverging responses to harm fuel familial tensions as each takes separate yet interconnected paths toward healing. With an all-racialized cast, the play explores justice, love, protection, healing, and transformation.
