Workshop Description
Join us for a creative and enlightening workshop where the art of hair braiding meets the power of civic engagement. “Styles and Stories” is designed to weave together the personal and the political, using the cultural and social significance of hairstyles as a platform for discussion and activism.
Activity Details
A brief history of hair braiding across different cultures, focusing on its roots and significance will be discussed. There will be a Demonstration of box braiding. Facilitator will Discuss how hairstyles can symbolize identity, resistance, and solidarity in historical and modern contexts (e.g., the Black is Beautiful movement, cultural appropriation debates).
Facilitator will Explore stories of individuals who have used their hairstyles as a form of protest or political statement. Participants will pair up to practice braiding techniques on each other while discussing what civic engagement means to them. Participants will be encouraged to consider how personal expression through hairstyles can influence perceptions and actions in public spaces.
Facilitator will lead a discussion on how participants can use their personal passions and talents (like hair braiding) to influence and engage in local community issues. Facilitator will Highlight ways to get involved in voter education, community organizing around health and beauty standards, or supporting local policies that impact cultural expression. Cost: $50/participant plus travel fee
