About this Event
Join guide, Amanda Mitchell, on a guided plant walk to learn how to identify and use common and wild plants as food and medicine. As per conditions in Calgary's Park's Bylaw we will not be foraging as part of this event.
During a plant walk you will learn:
- about local landscape ecology;
- to identify plants by key traits and habitat;
- to distinguish between edible and poisonous lookalikes;
- to distinguish between weeds and native species;
- stories, interesting facts and preparation techniques for edible plants; and
- medicinal usage based on traditional & modern herbal practices and scientific research.
Who can attend:
Adults, kids, and families can all attend these events, and tickets for kids under 12 are free. Events are limited to 20 people per event (15 adults and 5 children) for the enjoyment of all participants.
Those planning to bring pets, for the comfort of all participants involved, please keep your pets on their leads at all times. Pet owners will be responsible and liable for any incidents involving their pets and other pets or people during these walks.
What to bring:
Please dress appropriately for being outside: adequate clothing for changing weather, water-resistant hiking shoes, water, mosquito repellent and sunscreen when needed.
Consider bringing an offering for the plants, if desired. I like to carry a little extra water for a little drink as thanks.

Cancellations and Refunds
Tickets can be cancelled for a refund up to 24 hours before the start of the event. Tickets cancelled after this time will not be refunded. Credit towards future events for cancellations after 24 hours will be at the digression of the instructor.
If the event is cancelled due to weather or low turn out a full refund will be issued. The event instructor will provide as much notice as possible of cancelled events to participants keeping in mind the dynamic nature of Calgary's weather.
About the Instructor:
Amanda Mitchell is an accomplished agrologist and owner of Wise Lass, a small business specializing in eco wellness education and support services. With a strong background in environmental science, sustainability, herbalism, and holistic nutrition(TM), Amanda loves to help people connect to the natural environment.
Growing up in the boreal forest of west-central Alberta, Amanda developed a deep appreciation for the natural world, which she has expanded through her professional work, Girl Guides of Canada activities, and personal travels. She holds a BSc in Environmental & Conservation Sciences from the University of Alberta, where she minored in soils and vegetation sciences, and a MA in Environmental Sustainability from Royal Roads University. Additionally, Amanda is a Reiki Master and Certified in Holistic Nutrition (TM) by the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, and is an Professional Agrologist in Alberta. Amanda has also taught science-based classes at CSNN in both Calgary and Edmonton.
She now shares her expertise leading community walks in her spare time to help educate and empower individuals seeking to prioritize their health and well-being while minimizing their impact on the environment.
