Group Discussion: Understanding Boundaries in Relationships

Objective: To create a safe and open space for discussing boundaries in relationships, particularly in the context of open and polyamorous dynamics. Participants will explore the difference between boundaries and rules, learn to set healthy limits with partners and metamours, and discuss how to navigate boundaries and sex.

1. Introduction
  • Welcome participants and set group norms
  • Define boundaries vs. rules:
  • Boundaries: Personal limits that protect an individual's well-being
  • Rules: Agreements between partners that dictate behavior

2. Boundaries vs. Rules in Open Relationships
  • Discuss why rules often fail in open relationships
  • Explore how healthy boundaries encourage autonomy and respect.
  • Activity: Scenario Discussion

3. Boundaries with Metamours
  • Discuss the role of metamours in polyamorous relationships.
  • Common boundary concerns:
  • Frequency of interaction
  • Level of communication
  • Sharing personal details about each other’s relationships
  • Activity: Boundary Role-Play

4. Boundaries with Metamours & Your Children
  • Discuss the importance of protecting children’s emotional well-being.
  • Key topics:
  • Deciding when and how to introduce a metamour to your children.
  • Setting expectations for a metamour’s role in your children’s lives.
  • Handling discomfort from co-parents or family members.
  • Open sharing: Parents in the group share personal experiences (if comfortable).

5. Boundaries with Sex
  • Exploring comfort levels with sexual boundaries:
  • Safer sex practices & STI testing agreements.
  • Emotional safety: What does it mean to feel secure in sexual relationships?
  • Privacy vs. disclosure: How much do partners share about their sex lives with others?
