Grief, creative expression, growing up Jewish. Join us for an enlightening afternoon salon reading & discussion with poet & author Susan Hayden, moderated by music writer Steve Hochman. Introduction by Ellen Davidson Cantor, photographer and poet, hosted in the intimacy of her home in Rolling Hills.
Susan Hayden and Ellen Davidson Cantor have experienced profound losses - both losing their husbands, and Susan, her father and best friend. Both turned turned to poetry and writing to navigate a pathway through the grief; Susan a multi-genre writer and who founded the literary series Library Girl at the Ruskin Theater, Santa Monica, in 2009. Susan grew up Jewish in Encino, LA's San Fernando Valley; Ellen is known, highly respected photographer who grew up Jewish in her native Chicago, relocated to LA after obtaining her BS to continue her education in Interior and Architectural Design at UCLA. This is her first book of poetry.

Three devastating losses are at the heart of Susan Hayden’s lyrical memoir, Now You Are a Missing Person. The suddenness of each of these deaths ― her father, her childhood best friend and her husband ― sparks and guides a series of explorations to claim equilibrium and a sense of self. Stories, poems and fragments are woven together to trace Hayden’s search for identity and belonging through lovers and friends, some enduring, some ephemeral. She creates an intimate album of her life, from the 1970s to the present, evoked in an LA populated by troubadours and actors, both shining and fading. Raised in an observant Jewish family in the suburban San Fernando Valley, she struggles and finds her footing in an ever-shifting culture of expectations around body image, sexuality, motherhood, widowhood, and autonomy.

Unfolding Time: Poems for the Grieving, by Ellen Davidson Cantor, honors the memory of her husband, Norman F. Cantor, MD, while exploring the intimate process of sorrow at the loss of a loved one. Written over a period of 18 months, Ellen’s poetry invites readers to identify with her shifting perspectives on the tasks of daily life as she navigates a world without her beloved husband of 57 years. Her hope for this collection is that these poems will help others traverse the rocky and challenging journey called bereavement.
