About this Event
For Ages 18+ – Create beautiful botanical artworks while learning the basics of drawing and painting with watercolors and watercolor pencils, both at the Armory as well as in a botanical garden. This class offers the perfect opportunity to learn the art of botanical drawing and watercolor painting. We will create stunning botanical artworks while gaining an understanding of the fundamentals of the craft. Any level of experience is welcome. If you love plants, you will enjoy the class!
Botanical art is an accurate representation of plants for the purpose of botanical identification and education of the viewer. This class will focus on creating renderings based on local plants that can be found in our very gardens. The first class will meet at Arlington Gardens, a 3-acre botanical garden located in Pasadena. Through exploring, identifying, and observing in person, you will then bring your experience and knowledge with you to the Armory for the following class meetings.
The final classes will focus on detailed rendering and composition. You will build light boxes to display your plants to draw them in an even light situation. We will learn how to make sketches, lay out our illustrations, and finalize them with much attention to detail. We will learn to use light, shading, and color-matching techniques. You will not be required to bring supplies to the first class meeting. Recommended supply lists will be reviewed and distributed in the first class meeting.
