3S Artspace is thrilled to welcome back Boston Dance Theater this March!
Red is a feeling is an evening of short dance works which present multi-faced expressions of love, longing, and the fight to live, woven together by the color red. The program takes its title from a new commission by Iranian-Hispanic choreographer Roya Carreras Fereshtehnejad who was diagnosed with two forms of cancer in her early thirties, undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. Boston Dance Theater commissioned Roya to make a new piece which “recalls the sensations where the experience of fighting for your life, holding on to each minute, and letting go all collide into the here and now.”
Roya’s piece is paired with BDT Founder/Co-Director Jessie Jeanne Stinnett’s "Fifties” – set to a collection of favorite popular tunes from the 1950s. With the healing power of movement at its center, "Fifties” celebrates joy and rhythm and invites the audience to clap along as the work unfolds.
"Memories" is a stunning reflection by BDT Co-Artistic Director Itzik Galili. In this work, Galili revisits his illustrious choreographic career, weaving together past movement phrases with text written over a decade ago. Originally created for the women artists of BDT, "Memories" serves as both a tribute to Galili’s creative evolution and a testament to the dancers’ expressive depth.
Jessie and Roya’s pieces are joined by two stirring duets from BDT’s repertoire: "If as if” by Itzik Galili and “Firebird” by Marco Goecke.

“'Fifties,' another world premiere from Boston Dance Theater Artistic Director Jessie Jeanne Stinnett and danced by her company as well as Newport Contemporary Ballet, closed out the program. It did so with pure ebullience, just as the first work had opened it. Audience members almost immediately began to clap along with Chuck Berry’s 'Johnny Be Good,' the first of many 1950s era rock tunes in the work. Two dancers moved center stage while castmates upstage clapped and cheered them on – what a party! “ –Dance Informa
About Boston Dance Theater:
We are bold, creative, ambitious, hardworking and courageous. We are all of those things without hubris. Boston Dance Theater (BDT) welcomes new ideas, engagement and critical insight into its art and company.
Named on Dance Magazine’s prestigious “25 to Watch” list, BDT aspires to be Boston’s first nationally and internationally-known contemporary dance company. We are committed to our art, community and a culture of innovation, accountability, and JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion). All of our artworks are socio-politically relevant and match the talents of diverse and powerful dancers with our acclaimed choreographic partners.
BDT is the brainchild of Founder and Co-Artistic Director Jessie Jeanne Stinnett. Stinnett co-directs the company with her mentor, Dutch-Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili. Inspired by her work with multiple companies and choreographers in Europe, the UK, the US, and Canada, Jessie envisioned a company with a diverse artistic base collaborating with cutting-edge choreographers in a setting of equity and acceptance.
Since 2017, the company has presented over 72 workshops, open rehearsals, and performances to an audience of over 6,500 with presenting partners Global Arts Live, Jacob’s Pillow, Harvard ArtLab, and many others. BDT is a registered 501(c)3 tax-exempt charity as of 2019.
