Bossaphonik on Friday April 19th features the mighty Nubiyan Twist - a thrilling 9 piece powerhouse of a band who have risen to become one of the leaders of the UK’s fertile alternative music scene.
Nubiyan Twist originally formed back in 2011 at the Leeds College of Music. They have previously featured twice at Bossaphonik back in 2014 and 2017 and in recent years their music has taken off with the band receiving worldwide exposure. They are a collective of virtuosic players, skilled producers and inspired composers who join forces to create a unique, infectious sound drawing on a wide range of influences including jazz, hip hop, afrobeat, dancehall, soul, reggae and electronic dance music. Their music is played with ultra-tight musicianship in a powerful big band sound which consistently mesmerises audiences.
At this Bossaphonik event, Nubiyan Twist will be in the early stages of a 15-date UK tour showcasing their new 4th album “Find Your Flame,” set for release on May 3rd. It sees the band embark on a fresh musical odyssey with their vibrant sound seamlessly weaving together global grooves, soul and jazz, intwined with tasteful electronics, horn-led melodies and spontaneous improvisation. The heady sun-drenched release is peppered with impressive collaborations including the iconic Nile Rodgers and artists from across the globe including afrobeat royalty Sean Kuti and Malian singer Mamani Keita alongside UK homegrown talent such as corto.alto, Ria Moran, K.O.G. and NEONE the Wonderer. The band also welcomes new Sheffield-based vocalist Aziza Jaye into the forefront of their sound.
Their 2015 self-titled debut album and acclaimed “Jungle Run” in spring 2019 led to their third massive album “Freedom Fables,” released on Strut Records in 2021. The album was heavily playlisted on BBC 6 Music alongside live sessions with Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2, plus their UK TV debut on Later...with Jools Holland. The band have rocked the festival stages of Glastonbury, Wilderness, We Out Here, Womad, Shambala, Love Supreme, Boomtown and Edinburgh Jazz Festival, alongside many festivals and headline tours in Europe.
Praise for the “Freedom Fables” album:
“A cauldron of energy that bubbles with invention. Exhilarating stuff” Record Collector
“Elevated into the highest tier of their cohort” Loud & Quiet
“The type of record that should be blasted over a sun-drenched festival crowd” Clash
