Inspirert av den tradisjonelle hvaljakten i Lamalera på øya Lembata i Indonesia, utforsker Tianzhuo Chen og Siko Setyanto sitt performanceverk "Ocean Cage" den komplekse forviklingen av tradisjon og ritualer med økologi og modernisering. Musikeren Nova Ruth, som medvirker i verket, driver også en nomadisk kunstnerisk plattform i form av et 70 tonn tungt seilskip ved navn Arka Kinari. Skipet er på reise for å mane frem motstandskraft mot klimaendringene og oppfordre til en ny kontakt med havet. I denne samtalen utforsker de tre hvordan forskningen og aktivismen deres smelter sammen i verket "Ocean Cage", og hvordan den spesifikke indonesiske konteksten åpner et rom for en bredere samtale om kunst og miljøet.

Inspired by the traditional whale hunts of Lamalera, on the island of Lembata in Indonesia, Tianzhuo Chen and Siko Setyanto’s performance work Ocean Cage explores the complex entanglement of tradition and ritual with ecology and modernisation. Musician Nova Ruth, who performs in the work, also runs a seventy-ton sailing ship Arka Kinari, a nomadic artistic platform on a voyage to promote resilience to climate change and re-engagement with the sea. Together they unpick how this research and activism collides in the work, and how the specific contexts of Indonesia can intersect with a wider conversation about art and the environment.
