Join us this Chancellor’s Day for a day of professional learning inspired by border crossing and the performing arts.
About this Event

There are many kinds of borders. Some are drawn, like borders of a country. Some are created naturally by bodies of water, mountains, or uninhabitable landscapes. Still others can hold us back, hold us in place, or hold us together—such as borders of nationality, race, or class.

Join us this Chancellor’s Day for a full program of professional learning for teachers inspired by crossing borders, defying boundaries, and applying the power of the performing arts in the classroom.

FIRST LOOK AT A NEW EXHIBITION. Participating educators will be the first to view a new exhibition, BORDER CROSSINGS: EXILE AND AMERICAN MODERN DANCE, 1900-1955. Through multimedia collections, this new exhibition centers the role of BIPOC dancers in the social history, across two world wars and dramatic social upheavals, of modern American dance.

THE WOMEN DRUMMERS OF RWANDA. The day will begin with a keynote address by Odile Gakire Katese (“Kiki”), the founder of a Rwandan women’s drumming group known as Ingoma Nshya. Kiki will discuss her groundbreaking work organizing women to reclaim Rwanda’s drumming heritage, as a means of promoting healing in the wake of genocide. The day will conclude with a celebratory drumming performance.

WORKSHOPS ON TEACHING WITH DANCE, MUSIC, COSTUME DESIGN, AND FILM COLLECTIONS. Teachers will also have the opportunity to attend TWO of the following workshops, each focused on using a different collection in the Library for the Performing Arts:

  • Border Crossings: Exile and American Modern Dance, 1900–1955: In this dance exhibition tour for educators, participants will investigate the effect that large-scale political and geographical circumstances have on the creation of new dance genres.
  • Marco Rizo: A Legacy of Latin American Music in the US: In this music workshop, teachers will learn about Marco Rizo, a Cuban American pianist, composer, band leader, and music educator that helped bring Caribbean sounds and beats to the American mainstream in the aftermath of WWII.
  • Willa Kim: Wondrous, Whimsical, Ingenious Costume Designs: In this costume presentation, educators will learn about Willa Kim’s life and her playful approach to costume design for the stage and television.
  • Beyond Boundaries: Pioneers and Pathfinders on Film: In this film screening, participants will view and discuss films about boundary-defying individuals and learn how to use the Reserve Film and Video Collection to spark a conversation in their classrooms.

Eligible NY State educators can receive 5 CTLE credit hours for participating.

Space is limited! Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided for those attending.

Please select ONE ticket option during registration which will include a total of two workshops. Registrants that reserve more than one ticket will be assigned an option based on availability.
