This month Books Chai & More the Raah Book Club will be discussing the book Essays in Idleness (Tsurezuregusa) by Yoshida Kenko.
Despite his turbulent times the Buddhist priest Kenkō met the world with a measured eye. As Japan stood on the brink of a dark political era Kenkō held fast to his beliefs & took refuge in the pleasures of solitude. Written around 1331 Tsurezuregusa reflects the congenial priest's thoughts on subjects ranging from politics & ethics to nature & mythology & marks the crystallization of a distinct Japanese principle: Beauty is to be celebrated even though it will ultimately perish.
The book discussion will be led by Sameer Joshi an artist & a poet. He is a Professor of English with the University of Maryland US.
