Books at the Institute presents a special in-person presentation with Artem Chapeye, Ukrainian writer, translator, reporter, traveller, and soldier as he discusses his books, The Ukraine and Ordinary People Don’t Carry Machine Guns in conversation with Megan Buskey. Chapeye’s writing blends fiction and nonfiction to illuminate complex national and social issues through the experiences of ordinary people. His prose is intimate and unembellished, marked by self-reflection and a wry, humane humor that brings depth to even the harshest realities. With an eye for the details of daily life amid extraordinary circumstances, Chapeye reveals the quiet resilience and contradictions that define life in times of war and upheaval.
Megan Buskey is a writer focusing on Ukrainian culture, politics, and history. She is the author of Ukraine Is Not Dead Yet, which won the 2024 AAUS Book Prize. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Nation, and NPR, and she was a Fulbright Fellow in Ukraine.
