About the book:
Just in time for the 2024 Paris Games, this autobiographical picture book for all ages, co-authored by Olympian Billy Mills and Donna Janell Bowman, recounts Billy's extraordinary journey from the impoverished Pine Ridge Reservation, where he was orphaned by age 12, to the 1964 Olympic winner’s podium in Tokyo. Armed with determination and Lakota values, Billy overcame severe health challenges and systemic racism by chasing a dream. Despite all odds, he became the first (and still only) American to win the Olympic gold medal in the 10,000-meter event. He has since dedicated much of his life to the service of others.
About the authors:
Billy Mills is an Olympic gold medalist, author, and cofounder of Running Strong for American Indian Youth, a nonprofit organization that supports the critical needs of Native communities. A member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) Tribe, he grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and now travels around the world inspiring audiences to embrace unity through diversity while learning from historical injustices. He lives near Sacramento, California.
